New robot can help treat rare birth defect that affects the food pipe of babies

Scientists have created a robot, which can be implanted into a baby’s body to treat a rare birth defect that affects the food pipe. The prototype robotic implant, developed by the researchers at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital in the US, encourages tissue growth in babies. The robot is a small device which is attached to the oesophagus by two rings. An incorporated motor then stimulates the cells by gently pulling the tissue. Using two types of sensors – one to measure the tension in the tissue and…

Climate Change Affects Nearly All Life on Earth

Most life on Earth is already being changed by the warming climate, even though the rise in global temperature since pre-industrial times has been rather slight, researchers warned on Thursday. The study in the journal Science found that 82 percent of key ecological processes — including genetic diversity and migration patterns — are being altered by global warming. These effects extend to land, oceans and freshwater environments, even though temperatures have risen just about 1.87 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) over pre-industrial times due to fossil fuel burning. “We now…

New AceDeceiver Malware Affects Non-Jailbroken iOS Devices: Researchers

Researchers claim to have found a new strain of malware that can infect a large pool of iPhone and iPad devices. The iOS malware, dubbed AceDeceiver, is said to affect non-jailbroken devices without the user’s knowledge. Apple has reportedly pulled three apps from the App Store that were believed to be from the AceDeceiver family. AceDeceiver was designed to exploit a flaw in Apple’s FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) protection mechanism, reports security firm Palo Alto Networks. The DRM technology protects unauthorised download of apps and other content on the…
