DU course profile: BA programme is a good bet to help prepare for IAS exams

Contemporary age is marked by multidisciplinarily for gaining knowledge in the universities across the globe. Liberal arts and humanities focusing on the interdependence of societal problems are gaining ascendency over classical normative and specialised courses. BA program in Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) that the University of Delhi offers is most meticulously designed curriculum that encourages students to study a combination of subjects of their own choice. It offers, therefore, a vast array of diversified disciplines aimed at holistic cognitive development.

The scheme for the restructured BA program course enables students to orient towards three important knowledge areas. They are typically nomenclatured as core courses (including its specific elective and the generic elective areas), ability enhancement compulsory courses, and skill enhancement courses.

The bucket-list for three years would be two core subjects of one’s choice, for instance political science and economics, two compulsory ability enhancement courses, one being language (English/Hindi/Modern Indian Language) and the other environmental science and the optional skill enhancement courses from a wide range of choices such as computers, project management, public opinion and survey methods, financial economics, research methodology and so on.

The idea behind such architecture of BA is to allow students to explore the possibilities, whilst studying, to either go in for further studies or to gain employment after graduation. The core courses kindles interest in higher studies and research prospects including teaching, both at university and school levels. The papers offered in the core courses are foundational in character and also applied in a sense market-based. For instance, in political science the student studies political theory, Indian politics and administration and public policy.

Of course, language and environmental science would enhance ability in analytical and communications skills. The skill based courses are aimed at gaining technical skills which helps in gaining employment in the concerned field, such as stock exchange, non-governmental organizations and so on and partly helps in understanding and making the core courses more relevant.

Given the IAS exam course structure, BA Program is the best suited course to take the exam after graduation. The program actually prepares one to become a generalist that the civil services exam requires. The other interesting fields such as Journalism and mass- communication, Law, management, NGOs, Education, film making etc are open for further explorations. It may also happen that the students get empowered enough with the skills needed to begin with their own start-ups and entrepreneurial ventures.
