Gut bacteria may cause rheumatoid arthritis

Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have discovered that unhealthy bacteria in your gut could be the culprit that causes rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body mistakenly attacks itself. As a result of this disease, the body breaks down tissues around joints, causing swelling that can erode bone and deform the joints. The disease can damage other parts of the body, including the skin, eyes, heart, lung and blood vessels. In a study published in the journal Genome Medicine, the researchers noted that an abundance of certain…

Pomegranate juice may help fight ageing

Pomegranates are found with a potential to boost muscle strength and help to counteract ageing, say researchers. The findings showed that when we drink pomegranate juice, our body produces Urolithin A — a molecule. When this molecule gets transformed by microbes in the gut, it enables the muscle cells to protect themselves against ageing and also increases the muscle mass. As we age, our cells increasingly struggle to recycle the mitochondria — powerhouse of cells — and are no longer able to carry out their vital function and thus gets…

New insulin-producing beta-cell may improve diabetes treatment

Researchers have identified four separate sub-types of human insulin-producing beta-cells that may be important in the understanding and treatment of diabetes. “This study marks the first description of several different kinds of human insulin-producing beta cells,” said Markus Grompe, stem cell scientist at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, US. diabetes, affecting millions worldwide, is caused by the dysfunction or loss of insulin producing beta-cells which help the body to achieve normal blood sugar levels. Until now, beta-cells were generally regarded as a single, homogenous cell population. The…

Cancer risk may rise before and after diabetes diagnosis: Study

Individuals with Type 2 diabetes may be at an increased risk of developing cancer before and immediately after their diagnosis, says a study. The findings showed that the highest risk appears shortly after a diabetes diagnosis. Cancer incidence was also significantly higher in persons with diabetes within the first three months after diagnosis, but not after this time period. “This may in part be explained by increased health care visits and screening tests following a diagnosis of diabetes,” said Iliana Lega, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in Canada.…

Probiotic ‘Mishti Doi’ may relieve inflammation of digestive tract

Researchers at the University of Calcutta are discussing a possible collaboration with a confectioner to make available a probiotic ‘Mishti Doi’ that will be particularly beneficial to those suffering from Inflammatory Bowel Disease ( IBD ). Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for human health, especially one’s digestive system. Mishti Doi is sweet yoghurt and one of the most famous Bengali sweets. Ena Ray Banerjee, associate professor in the zoology department of the university, told IANS that probiotic products hold great promise for their anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative…

Too Much or Too Little Sleep May Up Inflammatory Disease Risk

Sleep disturbances and longer sleep duration are associated with increases in markers of inflammation, finds a new study. Insufficient sleep is considered a public health epidemic by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Together with diet and physical activity, sleep health represents a third component in the promotion of health-span,” said Michael Irwin from the University of California – Los Angeles, US. Common sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, have been associated with increased risk of inflammatory disease and mortality. “Sleep disturbance or insomnia should be regarded as behavioural…
