New way to diagnose head, neck cancer in early stages discovered

It is a very common occurrence for head and neck cancers to be diagnosed late. But because of new research conducted in Germany it is now possible to be able to diagnose the oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs), which are the most common type of head and neck cancers, at an early stage. The researchers had tested the mechanical properties of OSCC cells, and found them to be ‘softer’ than benign cells. The main authors of the study Josef Kas and Torsten W. Remmerbach said, “Early diagnosis and treatment of OSCCs is…

This new low-cost plastic sensor can help in early diagnosis of diseases

Scientists have developed a low-cost sensor made from semiconducting plastic that can be used to diagnose or monitor a wide range of health conditions, such as surgical complications or neurodegenerative diseases. The sensor can measure the amount of critical metabolites, such as lactate or glucose, that are present in sweat, tears, saliva or blood, and, when incorporated into a diagnostic device, could allow health conditions to be monitored quickly, cheaply and accurately. The device, described in the journal Science Advances, has a far simpler design than existing sensors, and opens…

Gut microbes could lead to depression in obesity

Turns out, gut microbes may contribute to depression and anxiety in obesity. Researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center studied mice that become obese when put on a high-fat diet. The Joslin scientists found that mice on a high-fat diet showed significantly more signs of anxiety, depression and obsessive behaviour than animals on standard diets. “As endocrinologists, we often hear people say that they feel differently when they’ve eaten different foods,” said C. Ronald Kahn, M.D., co-Head of the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism at Joslin. His lab has long studied…

Want to invest in ‘value’ stocks like Buffett? Look at these funds

Value investing is a strategy to spot stocks trading below their intrinsic values. The domestic equity market is going through a rough patch this year amid subdued macroeconomic triggers. Rising crude oil prices, slower-than-expected earnings growth, trade war concerns and a falling rupee have dragged midcaps and smallcaps down by up to 15 per cent so far in 2018. Voices are still echoing in the market that the risk-reward ratio in second-rung stocks is still not in favour of investors despite the recent correction. New investors who have entered the market in…

This wireless device can detect heart dysfunction in cancer survivors

Scientists have designed a novel wireless device which may accurately detect heart dysfunction in children who have survived cancer. Childhood cancer survivors are advised to undergo screening for the detection of heart dysfunction because of known anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity. However, screening with echocardiography — the standard of care for monitoring heart function — can be highly variable and limited. Another alternative is cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, which is expensive and is not widely accessible. In the study, the team tested Vivio — a prototype handheld instrument which collects pulse waves…
