Is The Pain Of High-Intensity Intervals Worth The Gain? That May Be Up To You

My first Orangetheory class started with several short bursts of running on a treadmill and ended in the same place, with a minute of hard running followed by another of all-out effort. In between heart-thumping intervals on the treadmill and a rowing machine, there were multiple rounds of squats, weights, side-crunches and more. After an hour, I was dripping in sweat and, according to my instructor, Natalie, poised to burn fat for hours afterward. It’s an enticing claim that has become increasingly trendy thanks to a variety of apps, trainers…

French say ‘non’ to food waste – should we do the same?

The French are a pretty innovative nation. They lead the world in style and they’re pretty good at putting ingredients together on a plate to make a stunning meal, too. They’re also quite bold when it comes to innovative legislation. They don’t shy away from doing things others might regard as a tad ‘nanny state’. The latest and most interesting is legislation on food waste. France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them, instead, to donate it…

Coconut: the good oil?

It’s easy to assume that coconut oil is well-established as a ‘healthy’ oil, these days, so entrenched is it in the advice of wellness gurus on social media; in popular recipe books, and in ‘healthy’ recipes everywhere you look. It’s a great feat of marketing that coconut oil has achieved this status. I’ve seen claims (usually from people selling coconut oil) that it is anti-cancer; a great weight-loss tool and will encourage a healthy prostate. You name it – coconut oil will, apparently, fix it. It’s par for the course…
