Vaccine shows promise in fight against breast cancer

An experimental vaccine is safe and effectively stimulates the immune system leading to regression of early-stage breast cancer, show results of a clinical trial. The researchers created the vaccine from immune cells called dendritic cells that are harvested from each individual patient to create a personalised vaccine. The immune cell vaccine targets the HER2 protein on breast cancer cells. The HER2 protein is overexpressed in 20-25 per cent of all breast cancer tumors and is associated with aggressive disease and poor prognosis. Researchers had previously shown that immune cells are…

Eat honey, gazpacho: Spaniards tell how to live till 100

New imaging technique to detect onset of vision loss

Researchers have developed a new non-invasive retinal imaging technique that could prevent vision loss in diseases like glaucoma – the second leading cause of acquired blindness worldwide. The new technique called multi-offset detection, which images the human retina — a layer of cells at the back of the eye that are essential for vision — was able to distinguish individual retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), which bear most of the responsibility of relaying visual information to the brain. The death of these RGCs causes vision loss in glaucoma, the researchers said.…

ITO even more polluted than Anand Vihar

If you thought Anand Vihar was the most polluted spot in the city and curbing emission levels there could bring down the capital’s sky rocketing pollutionaverage, take a look at ITO. The ITO station, which was out of order for nearly three years, started operating again from July 2016.PM2.5 levels recorded there are often as severe as Anand Vihar, at times even higher. TOI assessed PM2.5 levels for the past fortnight and found that ITO recorded higher levels than Anand Vihar. For example, the PM2.5 average at ITO between December…

Brain and tooth size didn’t co-evolve in humans

Brain and tooth size didn’t co-evolve in humans Contradicting a prevalent perception, a new study says that our brain enlargement and dental reduction did not happen in lockstep. The findings suggest that evolution of brain and tooth size in humans were likely influenced by different ecological and behavioural factors. “Once something becomes conventional wisdom, in no time at all it becomes dogma,” said study co-author Bernard Wood, Professor at George Washington University, US. “The co-evolution of brains and teeth was on a fast-track to dogma status, but we caught it…

Why cheap food is (sometimes) healthier than you think

SOME HEALTH FOODS—LIKE certain organic and gluten-free products—are worth their higher price tags since they pack unique benefits or are made under stringent product guidelines. For example, USDA “Certified Organic” chicken is pricier (but definitely well worth the cost) than your average poultry because it’s ethically raised and antiobitic-free. But take a protein bar, for example—how does the average person (or even a super fit, health-conscious guy such as yourself) determine which bar will serve them best in terms of general nutritional value? The answer, it turns out, is price.…
