How to Better Manage People with One Simple Test

Among the many frustrations that keep managers awake at night is the feeling that their employees are not performing their best in their respective jobs.  This suspicion can be the source of many performance related issues and can affect new managers and established ones alike. These concerns persist because of not fully knowing why some people work hard to be great employees and others do not.  Surprisingly, education, knowledge and experience have little to do with the factors that cause employees not to take full ownership for their jobs. New blood test could predict second heart attack risk

A blood test that quickly and easily detects whether a person is at the risk of a secondary heart attack is being developed by scientists. The researchers at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Australia have identified plasma lipid biomarkers (fats in the blood) that improve upon traditional risk factors in predicting heart disease and stroke. The blood test is proposed to be trialled in Australia over the next 2-3 years, said Peter Meikle, a professor Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. Eventually this test will help better assess a…

Faster, Safer Lab Test Developed To Diagnose Heart Attacks

Researchers have developed a simple laboratory score which is safer and faster at diagnosing patients who visit the emergency department with heart attack symptoms. The findings, published in the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), suggest that the score can also identify patients at risk of subsequent heart issues after discharge. “We have developed a simple lab score that is superior to using cardiac troponin alone for the identification of patients at low and high risk for heart attack or death at emergency department presentation,” said co-author Peter Kavsak from the…

This new blood test can predict due date and premature birth

Researchers from Standford University have developed a new blood test for pregnant women that may detect whether their pregnancies will end in premature birth. The technique can also be used to estimate a foetus’s gestational age — or the mother’s due date — as reliably and less expensively than ultrasound. There have been several studies on preterm births in the past, and the reasons for it. A study by the University of Pennsylvania linked such births to changes in the mother’s bacteria. Another study by CHU Sainte-Justine in Canada found that having a baby…

Lyft Partners nuTonomy to Test Self-Driving Cars in Boston

Uber rival Lyft said Tuesday it would begin testing autonomous ridesharing in Boston under a partnership with the technology startup nuTonomy. Under the partnership, nuTonomy and Lyft will collaborate to gain insights into “all aspects of ensuring a passenger’s comfort and safety” in self-driving vehicles, a joint statement said. Lyft’s move follows a similar effort by Uber, which has been using autonomous vehicles in a test program in some US cities. “At Lyft, we imagine a world where car ownership is optional and cities are designed for people instead of…
